ball under basketball ring
The Iowa State Cyclones jumped out to an early lead and never looked back against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday, securing an 83-71 victory in Big 12 basketball action. The game, held at Gallagher-Iba Arena, was moved up an hour due to a winter storm that slowed travel across the region.
First-Half Domination
Iowa State wasted no time setting the tone, starting with an 11-2 run. Junior guard Milan Momcilovic was on fire, hitting a 3-pointer, drawing a foul, and sinking the free throw to extend the Cyclones' lead to 23-4 just seven minutes into the game. Oklahoma State struggled early, missing nine of their first 10 shots and their first six 3-point attempts.
By halftime, Iowa State held a commanding 51-21 lead. Momcilovic had already tallied 19 points in the first half, while the team connected on nine of 17 3-pointers. The Cyclones' defense kept the Cowboys in check, leaving Oklahoma State fans stunned in the stands.
Second-Half Surge by the Cowboys
Despite the deficit, Oklahoma State fought back in the second half, outscoring Iowa State 50-33. Guards Kanye Clary and Jaylen Curry each scored 19 points, giving the home crowd something to cheer about. However, the early hole proved too deep to climb out of, and the Cowboys fell to 14-6 overall, 2-5 in Big 12 play.
For Iowa State, Joshua Jefferson added 20 points to support Momcilovic’s stellar performance. The Cyclones improved to 18-2 overall, 5-2 in the Big 12 with the win.
Momcilovic’s Hot Streak
Momcilovic’s performance was nothing short of impressive. The 6-foot-8 junior guard finished the game with 27 points, making eight of 12 field goals, including five of nine 3-pointers. He was also perfect from the free-throw line, sinking all eight attempts. Over his last three games, Momcilovic has averaged 27.7 points, cementing his role as a key player for the Cyclones.
Fan Experience Despite Weather
With the winter storm impacting travel, the game offered free general admission, and fans still showed up to support their teams. Oklahoma State’s fans remained lively until the final buzzer, even as their team struggled early on. Folks in the arena braved icy conditions to witness the Big 12 matchup firsthand.
If you're heading out for games this weekend, be sure to check road conditions and allow extra travel time. Bridges and overpasses are likely to freeze first in this weather.
