Oklahomans have until October 9 to register to vote in the upcoming general election on November 3. This election will decide key races, including the state’s next governor, members of Congress, state legislators, and more.

Misha Mohr with the Oklahoma State Election Board emphasized that the October 9 deadline is firm. "Don’t wait until the last minute," Mohr said. There are no exceptions to this deadline.

How to Register

For most folks, registering to vote is straightforward. If you have an Oklahoma driver’s license or state ID, you can register online through the Oklahoma Voter Portal. The portal allows you to update your voter information or register for the first time.

However, Mohr noted that the information entered must match exactly what’s listed on your ID. "For example, if ‘Avenue’ is abbreviated as ‘Ave’ with no punctuation on your license, you’ll need to enter it that way," she explained.

One of News 4’s new reporters recently tried to register online after moving here from out of state. She ran into a snag when the system flagged her address as incorrect, even though she entered it as it appears on her ID. Mohr said the Election Board plans to investigate this issue further.

If your address doesn’t match or if you’ve moved recently, registering might require extra steps. In these cases, you’ll need to print a voter registration form, fill it out, and submit it by mail or in person. Forms can be dropped off at your county election board office or a local tag agency.

Important Deadlines

Whether mailing or dropping off your registration form, it must be postmarked or submitted by October 9. Once processed, you’ll receive your official voter registration card in the mail. This card can serve as your form of ID when you head to the polls.

Another deadline to keep in mind is for absentee mail-in ballots. If you plan to vote by mail, you have until October 19 to request your ballot. This can also be done through the Oklahoma Voter Portal.

Polling Place Changes

Mohr reminded voters to double-check their polling location before heading out to cast their ballots. Some polling places may have changed since the last election. You can find your designated polling place by checking the Oklahoma Voter Portal or contacting your county election board.
