yellow and black heavy equipment on snow covered ground
The Stranded Motorists Assistance and Recovery Teams (SMART teams) were on standby as snow moved across Oklahoma on Friday, continuing into the weekend. However, no motorists required their assistance overnight, according to officials.
Uneventful Night for SMART Teams
Sgt. Matt Wright of the Oklahoma National Guard reported that the teams, which were prepared to respond to stranded drivers, saw no calls for service from Friday night, into Saturday morning. Wright credited Oklahomans for adhering to warnings issued earlier in the week.
"Everyone has taken the advisement in the last several days to stay off the road. They have taken that to heart," said Wright. "Last night was very uneventful, and that is a good thing on our part."
Statewide Preparedness Amid Winter Weather
The SMART teams, part of the state’s coordinated response to hazardous weather conditions, consist of personnel from the Oklahoma National Guard and other agencies. These teams are stationed strategically across the state to provide immediate assistance to motorists stranded due to snow, ice, or other severe weather-related issues.
Oklahoma officials had issued widespread advisories earlier in the week, urging residents to limit travel during the winter storm. The National Weather Service forecasted snow accumulations and icy conditions across several parts of the state, prompting precautionary measures. The absence of incidents overnight suggests that those warnings were largely heeded.
Wright expressed gratitude for the public's cooperation, noting that staying off the roads not only ensured individual safety but also helped emergency teams remain available for potential critical situations.
