Oklahoma saw a stretch of winter weather from Friday through Sunday, with snow and freezing temperatures blanketing much of the state. While the main roads have been treated over the weekend, many neighborhoods and side streets are still packed with snow and ice, making for slick conditions.

Road Conditions

Road crews worked hard over the weekend to clear highways and major thoroughfares. However, residential streets and less-traveled roads remain a challenge. After the snow melted slightly during the day, freezing temperatures overnight caused a refreeze, leaving icy patches that are hard to spot, especially in the early morning hours.

Folks driving to work or school on Monday morning are encouraged to take it slow and allow extra time for their commute. Bridges and overpasses are particularly prone to freezing first, so extra caution is needed there.

Cold Temps Stick Around

The freezing temperatures aren’t going anywhere just yet, according to forecasts. This means the snow and ice could linger on untreated surfaces for several more days. For now, it’s best to keep your winter gear handy and plan for slippery conditions when heading out.

Many Oklahomans spent the weekend shoveling driveways and sidewalks, but even those efforts can be undone by the overnight refreeze. "It's tough keeping up with it," said Lisa Harmon, a resident of Norman. "Every time I think I’ve cleared it, it’s icy again by morning."

Stay Safe

For those who need to drive, experts recommend keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and avoiding sudden stops or turns. If you’re walking outside, wear shoes with good traction to avoid slipping on icy sidewalks.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation crews will continue treating roads as needed, but it’s always good to check conditions before heading out. Stay warm and stay safe, y’all!
