As winter weather settles into Central Oklahoma, state transportation officials and safety experts are urging drivers to prepare for icy and potentially hazardous road conditions. With temperatures expected to drop below freezing in the coming weeks, understanding how to handle a vehicle if it begins to slide on ice is critical for safety.

Key Tips for Drivers

According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and AAA Oklahoma, here are the recommended steps if your car begins to slide:

  • Remain calm: Avoid panicking or making sudden movements.
  • Take your foot off the accelerator: Gradually reduce speed without slamming on the brakes.
  • Steer gently: Turn the wheel in the direction you want the front of your car to go.
  • Do not overcorrect: Avoid jerking the wheel, as this can worsen the slide.
  • Use anti-lock brakes (if equipped): Press the brake pedal firmly and steadily to let the system work.
  • Stay aware of road conditions: Keep an eye out for black ice, especially on bridges and shaded areas.

What Officials Are Saying

ODOT spokesperson Lisa Logan emphasized the importance of preparation during a press statement on Monday. “We urge all drivers to check their tires, brakes, and windshield wipers before heading out, especially if snow or ice is in the forecast,” Logan stated. She added that drivers should travel with an emergency kit that includes blankets, water, a flashlight, and non-perishable food items.

AAA Oklahoma also recommends reducing speed and increasing following distances during winter weather. “Stopping on ice can take up to 10 times longer than on dry pavement,” said John Baker, AAA's regional safety advisor based in Oklahoma City.

Winter Weather Precautions

In addition to driving tips, officials have advised avoiding non-essential travel during winter storms. Those who must travel should check weather updates and road conditions via the Oklahoma Department of Transportation’s online road map or by calling 1-844-465-4997. Emergency assistance is also available through Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) by dialing *55 on a mobile phone.
